Why did my iPhone 16 Pro charge to 98% despite the 80% charging limit?

Hello guys,

I have a iphone 16 pro brand new, 2-3 weeks and I had set the limit for charging at 80% but today my iphone charged to 98% even if I have the limit set to 80%. And then I have restarted my iphone and my battery was 100%, somebody can help me with some explications?

Since your phone is still only a few weeks old, it might still be "calibrating" the battery optimizations. You can find more details here:

About Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone - Apple Support

Meanwhile, you can also verify your charge limit settings by going to

Settings > Battery > Charging. Confirm that your charge limit is set to 80%, if not, adjust it.

Also, check if Optimized Battery Charging is enabled. If it is, consider turning it off temporarily to see if the issue persists.

You can also Reset the charging settings by setting the charge limit to None. then plug in the phone to charge for about 10 seconds, then unplug. Reboot your phone and then go back and set the charge limit back to 80%.

It should have charged to 100% and you may have removed it from the charger too soon to prevent that from happening. Even with the Charge Limit, it will need to occasionally charge to 100% to provide an accurate Battery Health percentage. That happens for both Optimized Charging settings and when using a Charge Limit. You don't have any control over when that is going to happen. You can see that clearly here:

If you have Charge Limit set to less than 100 percent, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.

Nope! Everything reported by the OP is totally normal and no action needs to be taken. It is their choice on whether to use a Charge Limit or Optimized Charging, but the phone will still need to occasionally charge to 100%.

No. It is one or the other.

  • Optimized Charging will learn your charging behavior and is ideal when you are on a regular schedule where the phone will only charge to 100% until just before you normally take it off the charger.
  • Charge Limit is used when there is not a regular schedule to learn your charging behavior and you can always limit the normal charging percentage.

In both cases the phone will always need to charge to 100% on occasion to achieve accurate battery health results. Using Optimized charging if you take your phone off the charger earlier than usual then it will not be charged to 100%. It may also take a couple of weeks to learn your charging behavior when using Optimized Charging.

That's correct. You either use the Charge Limit or Optimized Battery Charging. But with the Charge Limit, your phone will still on occasion charge higher than the limit you set.

Personally, I don't use the Charge Limit. It's really not going to save the battery much, if any. I use Optimized Battery Charging, plugging my phone in to charge at night when I go to bed and wake up to a fully charged phone, which lasts all day.
