Numbers Formula TO Show Blank Cell

I created a checkbook in Numbers. I entered a formula in the balance column to keep running amount of deposits and withdrawals. It's working fine, but shows th balance in all the rows down the I chose. I would like to show blank cells (but still containing the balance) instead of the running balance which it now shows now. I researched and found two formulas, but neither one works.

=IF(ISBLANK(A1),"",A1+B1). =IF(A2-A3=0, "", A2-A3)

Can someone tell me how to use either ne of these formulas.

A cell can be blank or it can contain a value. It can't be blank but still contain a value.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do but you may find ideas you can use in this Checking Register Numbers document (Dropbox download).

It is based closely on a template that was included with an old version of Numbers.

You want a cell to appear as blank even though it has a number (the running balance) in it? Below is one way to do it with conditional highlighting. The number will not be visible if it is equal to the one in the row above it. it is not necessarily a perfect solution but it should work for a checking register.

To make the rule:

  1. Select the entire column E, other than headers and footers
  2. Start to make a conditional highlighting rule
  3. In the place where you see E1 in my rule, click on the green oval, click on the cell E1, edit it if necessary so it is E1 not E$1, then use the checkmark to accept it. This will make sense when you see it.
  4. Choose "custom" for the highlighting and set the text color to white (or the same as the fill color). If you are using alternating row colors in your register, you'll instead have to set the text opacity to 0% (i.e., invisible) by clicking on the color wheel next to the text color box. You'll see the opacity slider in the little color wheel window that pops up. Slide the slider to 0%.
  5. Click Done.
