How can I make iCloud to sync without dropping a file into the documents folder on Mac?

I'm finding iCloud doesn't sync unless I drop a file into the documents folder for example. Otherwise it shows like this...

Any change I make seems to happen quickly. So you could just right click and change the status, for instance, so that doesn't involve sending lots of data. It seemed to me that even doing opening an Info Window caused as sync. But then again, if there haven't been any changes, why sync?


I deleted a file on my phone, and within a minute it disappeared on my Mac. It seemed to me that clicking on files in that folder may have speeded it up-- but that could be a coincidence. 2nd time, doing nothing, 30 seconds.
