"the document doc_name.pages is on a volume that does not support permanent version storage"

I have saved Pages documents created on my 2020 M1 MacAir since I purchased it in -- well, 2020. Today, when I saved a document in iCloud drive, a storage location I have used since 2021, I received thiswith error that makes no sense. Since when can't document versions be browsed and restored? I created a test document 1, saved it, closed it. I created test document 2, saved it, closed it. I created test document 3, saved it, closed it. I could pick from the three versions.

I have Read/Write access to all iCloud documents.

The test document (3 versions) --

me: R/W

staff: Read Only

everyone: Read Only

A document from 2021 --

me: R/W

staff: missing

everyone: No Access

A one-time occurrence?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.6
