Logic Express 8 mute and solo buttons not working

In 2025, I am still using Logic Express 8 on a very old macBook (2, 1 - 2 GHz proc. speed, running OS 10.4.11 - hasn't been connected to the internet in many years.

For the most part, it's still running like a champ -- using it with my equally old Alesis Multimix 8 FireWire. However, lately, including on my current project, the mute button does not mute tracks and similarly the solo button will not solo tracks. I I saw an older post about turning off solo safe mode (so the red/does not appear on the solar button), and I did that As a result, the three tracks that previously were on solo safe and now no longer are now are able to be muted, but the other 10 or so tracks don't respond to muting or soloing. Please help?!
