iPod shuffle 4 connection to MacBook Air

Hello, I am looking to connect my iPod to my MacBook to put new songs on it. I have bought a AUX to USBC cable to try to connect the two, however this doesn't look like it has worked, as the connection has had no effect when plugged in. Do I need to buy a USBC to USB adapter (I have the charging cable used originally to put songs onto the iPod, a USB to AUX)? Is the issue the current cable that I have just not working? The iPod is on and charged, but will not connect to my MacBook at all.
