iPhone 17 Pro Max Carplay Keeps Disconnecting

I just upgraded from the 15 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max. My 15 rarely had any issues with CarPlay but my 17 I can barely keep CarPlay going for 2min before it disconnects and then refuses to reconnect. I’ve done all troubleshooting steps and nothing works.

Wireless Carplay

Troubleshooting done:

Reboot phone

Removed Car Connection

Factory Reset Infotainment System

Re-paired

Checked for updates

Disabled auto join of other WiFi networks.

It will connect but then shortly after disconnect and refuse to reconnect again.

This needs fixed as I use CarPlay everyday for my job.

Hi Everyone,

I finally got so fed up with the problem being even worse after the latest IOS update, that I started a ticket with chat support. They ran me thru trouble shooting, then told me that they needed a senior tech to look at it. They offered me a phone call. I scheduled the phone call, and the two techs who attempted to call me kept disconnecting and couldn't hear me. After this, I chatted back to support and requested they set me up an in-person appointment in store, and they did.

I went to the Apple Store, they were so kind and understanding, and one of the guys who worked there told me he ad his wife BOTH experienced this and it was a software issue. They recommended a backup, and to do a "reset" through their computer which includes completely removing the OS from the phone and then reinstalling it from their master OS in their computer there. The way I understood what they were doing, is that it were as if I were building a new PC, and installing windows for the first time ever on a blank hard drive.

They told me that the software that I had even though its the same "numbers" probably has some bugs in it, and it is best to just start fresh from scratch.

When they did that, I was skeptical, but it fixed every single problem. And I notice that voice to text works better than it had before, and that everything is generally quick.

So a complete reinstall of the OS at the Apple Store is what I recommend. It's worth the 3 hours I spent at the store, because I spent way more time than that troubleshooting random ****. And a software re-install and repair is indeed different than just factory resetting the phone.

Add me to the list. My 15 Pro running iOS 18.6 and my partner's 16 Pro Max running 18.7 work always. My new 17 Pro on iOS 26 disconnects constantly. I will try 26.0.1 later but I already read reports it's the same. Vehicle is a 2017 F150 with Sync 3 updated to the latest release supplied by Ford. It has been so bad we are leaving my partner's phone on iOS 18 until this is resolved.

Same issue for me. Many previous iPhones worked flawlessly, iPhone 17 Pro Max disconnects every few minutes. Tried changing every WiFi setting to my CarPlay device. No effect. My wife’s iPhone 15 ProMax works perfectly connecting to same hardware.

come on Apple many car manufacturers rely on CarPlay functionality now so this is a big deal especially on a flagship phone.

There are too many people with the same issue with this phone across disparate devices here for it not to be you, sort it out.

When you say "come on Apple" you may be under the impression anyone from Apple is here. They aren't. This is a user to user only forum, which Apple doesn't participate, nor read for user feedback. If you want Apple to "come on" provide feedback to them where it will be read and this is here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Posting here is just another "me too" post.

Having the same problem with a strictly wired connection on 2017 Ford Truck. Ford no longer supports system upgrades to this year model and hasn't for a few years. My 15 ProMax worked just fine, but my new 17 disconnects after 3-5 minutes. iOS has been updated to latest and no change. I also use this phone in a 2023 Jeep Wrangler and it works w/o any issues. I haven't tried removing my old phone, but will report back once I do and have tested.

This is obviously an Apple iPhone 17 issue. They were aware of it when 26.1 came out. Unfortunately we all experienced a moment of glee to only have it dashed away. There are likely many more people affected by it than just those who have posted here. It’s extremely frustrating that Apple will guide us through problem solving on the the phone, when an internal memo should be sent out to advise them there is no current fix. Are they working on one, we certainly hope so.

On CarPlay, one can imagine it's a monumentally difficult thing to determine why "some" but not "all" users have this issue. CarPlay has been 100% stable and reliable in our cars on both our iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Both wireless or cable. With so many different automotive platforms out there, it logically will take Apple time to isolate what doesn't work on some systems.

I have overlooked two details the majority of you are likely not able to see because your using a wireless connection. After CarPlay cuts out on my dash. My phone still thinks it’s connected to my vehicle. It is still charging and the volume is still showing to be output to CarPlay until I disconnect the cable. I would think this indicates a software problem. I’ve had several new iPhones at release. This is at least the second time I’ve had a new model have communication issues in this vehicle at the beginning. but there’s plenty of older vehicles on the road without the capability whatsoever and those people are making do just fine.

I chimed in a few weeks ago and still patiently waiting. I have just found two behaviors the majority of you likely not experiencing because you’re using a wireless connection. Brandon2021 - Thanks for the automation, this has improved things as you say.

My saga continues I have had several more interactions with Apple Senior support people, wild goose chases including remove my car magsafe chargers, change a few more settings etc (all made zero difference!).

They have now downloaded the log files from my phone with a detailed schedule of the carplay cutouts on the last couple of journeys I made, this I am told is being sent to the engineering team to see if they can see any issues!

I have a scheduled callback for next Friday to give me an update - fingers crossed!!!

Julie,

It worked for me!! I took my iphone back to the store last saturday, then I was out in the car for an hour running errands and absolutely no disconnects at all! I did make an appointment, and showed the rep your post and they understood completely. The rep at the store told me that when the updates are pushed out, sometimes they "drop kernels of information" -- hence the problem. Now, let's hope it "sticks," and I am done with this mess.

Thankyou!!

• My saga continues... it's been going since day 1 of the 17 pro max release.
I've now completed a full factory reset (wiped all network data before this and no luck there either)
• Thought it worked but I guess I didn't give it enough time in the first car
• Now same issue of disconnect and freeze the head unit across all 4 cars (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota)

Has anyone received any indication this will be addressed in 26.2?

It would be a violation of the NDA anyone signed who is testing Beta software to comment about it here.
