The short version is that macOS doesn’t provide native support for Xbox Elite Series 1 controllers, so while it may show up as a generic USB “game controller,” it won’t map properly to inputs unless you add a driver or use third-party software. Apple added some Xbox controller support in macOS Big Sur and later, but it’s really geared toward newer Xbox Series X|S and Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controllers. The Elite Series 1 isn’t included in that list.
To get yours working, you’ll want to install something like 360Controller (open-source driver for macOS, though not updated past macOS 11), or, preferably, use ControllerMate or reWASD (via Parallels/BootCamp)
Alternately, if you’re willing to go the extra step. A more modern solution is Steam Input if you mainly plan to use the controller with Steam games — Steam will recognize it even if macOS doesn’t, and you can configure button mapping directly.

Try pressing the small button at the top of the controller next to the charging port, with this symbol ))). Hopefully this works for you 👍
