Can folders be merged yet?

There's been an on-going issue with merging folders so that the contents of one aren't blindly wiped out by the other - it used to be some combination of holding Option while moving the folder with the oldest files to the location of the one with the newest, and it still broke if anything had the same name.

The solutions most people have resorted to are: using Terminal; using a different OS; buying a third party application; doing everything manually and checking as you go.

It's been a while since I used the out of the box solution, and I was wondering if there's been any changes to MacOS which include this useful but not headline grabbing feature.
