Why is Text Edit behaving so strange?

Hello. All of a sudden, Text Edit is behaving oddly. Working on a story and deleting returns between paragraphs, the first line of the bottom paragraph goes missing, and I have to move the scroll bar to regain it. And thinking the return command didn't register (which is a behavior of Sequoia) and hitting another return, the paragraphs crash into each other. And when attempting to deselect a paragraph by clicking outside it, it sometimes fails to deselect. If you're not looking, typing will replace the copy, which is dangerous and requires vigilance- needing Command Z's, or go into Time Machine to get the copy back.

Sequoia 15.6.1; tried restarting in safe mode- no go. Is this because AI is examining what's typed?

And another thing-If you want to change the text attribute, like bold or italic, you have to select the exact characters and spacing; otherwise, it doesn't work. Before, you can select mixed attributes and change by selecting the attribute twice.

Example: If text is italicized mixed with regular text and you want to change it to regular, previously you could select both, italicized and regular parts, and change them all to regular.
