iTunes purchases not showing up on iPhone when iPhone is connected to iTunes

Is it normal for iTunes purchases to not show up in iTunes on iPhone when iPhone is connected to iTunes? I've never had this problem before when buying songs on iTunes. Any help is greatly appreciated.
