Expired credit card still working on Apple Pay

Banks can remotely update the expiration date, so the card remains valid.

If the expiration date wasn’t automatically updated, somebody is going to come looking for the money involved.

The bank uses different card numbers, expiration date and CVV security code in electronic wallets, from your physical card. For example I have a physical card with expiration date of 2028. The expiration date of the card in Apple Wallet is 2032.

Banks do this because you’ll still have access to Apple Pay should the physical card become compromised and canceled. Normally you’d have to wait days or even weeks for a replacement.
