macOS Sequoia update shows “installer is damaged” on iMac running Big Sur 11.7.10

I am running MacOS Big Sur 11.7.10 and although I have automatic updates turned on, when I try to update to Sequoia I get a message saying the the Sequoia app is damaged and cannot be uploaded. Any ideas why it would be saying that?

Make sure you don't have an old Sequoia installer in /Applications. Then download a new one and apply that. But updating via system Settings should also work (boot to safe mode if it doesn't).

But do make a backup before upgrading.
