“This payment method can’t be used with the iTunes store”

I had an indicator that I needed to update my payment methods. Neither card in my profile had expired and they are always paid in full on time, so no problems with my bank. They suddenly just don’t work for Apple anymore? So I tried removing them to re-add them and now I keep getting the error message above. My account has no credit cards attached to it now. This isn’t good.
