If the only indication of the charges is from an email or text, be aware that it may be a phishing attempt to get you to log in to a site that appears to be Apple and divulge your password or credit card information. And to be clear, charges/subscriptions managed by Apple will only appear after you have double clicked the side button to approve them, followed by verification with Touch ID/Face ID or passcode. It is not something that can be done by accident. If you agreed to a free trial, you would also see the message that says you must cancel the trial at least a day before to avoid the subscription charge. Subscriptions will always auto renew until you cancel them.
