Safari bookmarks layout changed and favorites missing

Yesterday I had all my favorite bookmarks and folders of bookmarks in a panel on the left side of the Safari window. Now all that is gone and "recently Saved" is there, something I do not use. Further, all the favorites were at the top, folders below, and the folders had a name only with no additional detail. How can I get back to that?

Don't assume they meant OS 26. I updated to 15.7.1 also (still Sequoia) and got the same thing. I can no longer expand folders and still see all the other bookmarks as well. Now if I try to expand a folder, it automatically opens that folder and shows only what is in that folder. Makes it a pain to move bookmarks to other folders. No longer able to drag and drop between folders.

Also agree with those who hate all the extra verbiage on bookmarks. Makes it harder to quickly scan the list and find what I'm looking for.

My problems occurred because of changes with Safari 26 SIDEBAR BEHAVIOR. Apparently:

  1. when opening safari it will only go to the default sidebar. Previously my default sidebar displayed favorite websites
  2. to get to favorites on the sidebar I have to go through an extra step and ask safari to show favorites
  3. when favorites are shown, folders are on top and individual bookmarks below. This cannot be changed. It is the reverse of my preference.
  4. Individual bookmarks have 2 lines of text plus name plus url. I gave my bookmarks a name (or accepted the default) so that I could get a nice compact list. I cannot do that anymore because of superfluous info.

If I am wrong on any of this could someone please explain how to achieve prior behavior, my preferences.

on sequoia, you do have a couple options.

the first option, you can lay a new sequoia install over the old one without completely erasing and reinstalling sequoia. afterwards, you will have sequoia with safari 18.6.

and the other option, you may want to look at 6x6's reply in this discussion. if you are comfortable using terminal, their suggestion fixes things for those of us on sequoia with safari 26.0.1.

please note, if you are going to try the terminal commands, you need to grant terminal full disk access. go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access to do so.
