Safari sidebar in Sequoia on Mac

With the update to Safari 26.0.1, I cannot display my bookmarks in column view anymore, so I cannot navigate, organize or readily access my bookmarks. Instead, I see "Favorites" followed by a number and a caret, but clicking on the caret doesn't expand the contents in column view. This is useless. I wish that I could go back.

I have always used the apple menu to access my bookmarks. I only ever opened my sidebar to rearrange them. (drag and drop) but since upgrading to safari 26, I could no longer use the sidebar to rearrange bookmarks. then I was pointed to "edit bookmarks" from the apple menu, where I CAN still drag and drop. and this is a sequoia problem. apparently on Tahoe, it's not all that difficult to set it up where drag and drop works in the sidebar.

so basically, to me, the safari sidebar is now obsolete. :)

For those of us on Sequoia, and unhappy with safari 26, there is another option. you might want to look at FitzltEng’s reply in this thread. You can lay Sequoia in place over the Sequoia with safari 26.0.1 to end up back on Sequoia with safari 18.6 without a system wipe and reinstall.

if you would like, you can send feedback to apple. if they don't hear from us, how will they know there is an issue?

Please see Feedback - Safari - Apple.

or you may also want to check out 6x6's reply in this discussion. if you are comfortable using terminal, their suggestion fixes things for those of us on sequoia with safari 26.0.1.

I certainly have ISSUES with Safari 26

My problems occurred because of changes with Safari 26 SIDEBAR BEHAVIOR. Apparently:

  1. when opening safari it will only go to the default sidebar. Previously my default sidebar displayed favorite websites
  2. to get to favorites on the sidebar I have to go through an extra step and ask safari to show favorites
  3. when favorites are shown, folders are on top and individual bookmarks below. This cannot be changed. It is the reverse of my preference.
  4. Individual bookmarks have 2 lines of text plus name plus url. I gave my bookmarks a name (or accepted the default) so that I could get a nice compact list. I cannot do that anymore because of superfluous info.

If I am wrong on any of this could someone please explain how to achieve prior behavior, my preferences.
