Officials documents from Apple on Ruby support on MacOS

Hi , as my security team had detected my macOS had a built in ruby that had been outdated. From what I understand this built in ruby cannot be removed. My cyber team is asking if there is an official source from apple. May I know where do I get them? Thank you.

cyber team...?

I do not see official source material from Apple

A quick search—

2025 the current Ruby version for macOS is not pre-installed; you must install it yourself using a package manager.

The version of Ruby preinstalled on macOS is typically an older, end-of-life version and is not intended for consumer use or active development. Apple restricts access to it and does not provide updates for it.

what I see running Intel macOS Tahoe:

ruby -v

ruby 2.6.10p210 (2022-04-12 revision 67958) [universal.x86_64-darwin25]

Never had a issue simply ignoring the Ruby installed.

from what I see the latest released Ruby version 3.4.1 (?)

You will not find any official documentation from Apple about their Ruby, Python, or Perl support. Apple is not a conduit for current versions of these scripting solutions either. Apple warned in macOS Catalina beta release notes that it would remove each of these scripting solutions in a future release of macOS. So far, only Python was removed in macOS Monterey. The other two drag on as seriously deprecated entities.

If you have a need to maintain a separate (and current) Ruby implementation, ignoring the deprecated Ruby that Apple continues to install, you may want to look into asdf-vm. I use this to keep current with Ruby (e.g. 3.4.7) versions and make it the default Ruby instead of Ruby 2.6.10. I keep asdf itself current with homebrew and builds of Ruby will borrow libyaml and openssl3 from homebrew. Asdf maintains the Ruby installation in a dot-folder in your home directory.
