Problem with my IPad air Magic Keyboard since updating to IOS 26

I think I found the perpetrator - Microsoft’s Swiftkey App. De-installied it, now things are back to normal. Has never been a problem since recently, it is - has been - actually quite useful. The app „learned“ a lot of the words I was using and proposed / predicted the words I was going to use really well accordingly. But since iOS 26, it messed up as described. Thanks for the helpful tips!

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards > Full Keyboard Access, then turn off Full Keyboard Access.

Very interesting, thanks! I will have to add that to my "fix" note. I have seen cases in the past when 3rd party keyboards caused odd problems, but nothing like the one you have discovered -- making iOS 26 ignore keyboard settings.

Did you try the Force Restart?

Also try adding English to your keyboard list and set the Hardware Keyboard for that to German Standard. So you will have two keyboards to choose from, EN and DE, but both should normally type qwertz. Also turn on predictive text, so you can see in what language words are being proposed.

No, totally different.

Normally this is caused by having the wrong mapping checked in the list you get when you go to settings / keyboard / hardware keyboard and tap over at the right edge. If you give specific examples it may be possible to help further.

I can be more specific - maybe it is the same issue. And I was already trying to get to the bottom of it, but no success.

What I have read so far is that obviously since iPadOS 26 the system does ignore whatever keyboard setting there is, no matter what language or what layout (QWERTY vs QWERTZ, e.g.) is selected, it is all disregarded and it is assuming that the keyboard is US layout. I can definitely confirm that behaviour, drives me crazy.

Thanks! Very strange that the qwertz mapping is not honored, especially when you don’t even have an English keyboard available.

You should be able to choose the German mapping even for English and have it type qwertz (but with English spellcheck).

The 26.1 iOS update is utter trash…. Keyboard problems w/my Magic Keyboard (which I never had before installing 26.1). I DO NOT WANT the health option (it’s invasive), etc.

I would like you to post an option to go back to the iOS previous version which worked perfectly for me.

Below are my settings and the result when typing in Pages with the input set to DE at the bottom. When you do the same, you get qwerty, etc. instead of qwertz?

Going back is never possible with iOS.
