HP LaserJet 1020 Plus not printing on macOS Tahoe 26.0.1 (M4 MacBook Pro)

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro (M4) running macOS Tahoe 26.0.1, and I’m trying to connect HP LaserJet 1020 Plus printer via USB.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Initially, the printer appeared under System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add Printer, but it didn’t print anything.
  • I tried using both Gutenprint 5.3.3 and installing Foo2zjs drivers (since HP 1020 needs that firmware upload), but now the printer no longer appears at all when I try to add it.
  • I’ve already tried different USB-C ports and adapters, reset the printing system, and reinstalled Gutenprint, but no luck so far.

What I’d like help with:

  1. How can I get macOS Tahoe to get prints on my HP LaserJet 1020 Plus over USB?
  2. Is there a recommended driver or workaround that works reliably on Apple Silicon Macs for this printer model?
  3. Could there be any known USB compatibility issues with older HP printers and the new M-series (M4) Macs?
  4. Any guidance or steps that worked for others would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Did you check this related article?

You may need a special USB-C cable:

...

  • Add a USB printer: Connect the printer to your Mac using the appropriate cable.
  • Important: If your Mac has a single USB-C port, use a multiport adapter. Connect the printer, then connect a USB-C cable to a power supply to prolong the battery life of your Mac. See Use USB-C cables with Mac.

However, the newer macOS versions seem only to support USB printing when using workarounds:

For what it's worth I have a HP 1022 LaserJet that is still printing just fine on my M1 Studio Max running macOS 26.0.1. But bottom line the older a printer is the more likely it its to stop working after an update. As you know printer function is up to the printer manufacturer, not Apple.

You could try resetting the print system and add the HP 1020 back in.

Here’s screen shot of my HP 1022. You’ll notice driver information is different. You apparently download a Gutenprint driver at some point.

You might also try updating to macOS 26.1 which was released late yesterday.

I tried all your links, didnt worked any of them.

I also tried using a USB C dock.

Check the images, the dialog says its printing but actually its not!

The one driver that is available in apple community, says only works with macOS 15 or earlier.

disappointed! I bought this printer 10 years ago, still it beats the current once available in market and also cheap and best quality, This printer is a hero! works for ages! but now couldent use it with macOS :(
