iMovie must complete other tasks before performing this operation

I'm trying to move an Event from my iMac's hard drive to an external drive and I get this error despite leaving iMovie open overnight: iMovie must complete other tasks before performing this operation. It goes on to say "Try again once these tasks have been completed. You can view their progress by clicking the Activity Indicator in the toolbar, yet no indicator is present. What can I do?

Are you using the Force Quit Procedure (Apple Logo > Force Quot > iMovie)? A normal shut down won't do it, as you have found.

If still no luck, try deleting preferences and see if that cures the problem.

To delete preferences, open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete

preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. (To reopen your old library close iMovie and go to your Movie folder or wherever you have your old iMovie library stored. Double click on the library’s icon.  iMovie will open in that library.) Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.
