What is the limitation of Mac Tiled EDID with difference M chip?

What is the Maxium width of output screen when using tiled EDID? And how is different M chip having different performance? And why such limitation exists?

M4 (plain) supports up to Two fully hardware-accelerated External displays (three for Mac mini)


M4 PRO processor supports up to Two fully hardware-accelerated External displays. (three for Mac mini)


M4 MAX processor supports up to Four fully hardware-accelerated External displays.


M3 ULTRA processor supports up to Eight fully hardware-accelerated External displays:


M3 Ultra

Simultaneous support for up to eight displays:

  • Eight displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at up to 144Hz
  • Four displays with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at up to 240Hz
