I guess given time the beachball could finally resolve itself. If not you can force quit the stuck app

I'm afraid, your content can't be saved actively, if your work has not been saved automatically by Time Machine, for example, the data is gone.
Can you see the TaskManager if you press cmd+alt+esc ?
