Migrating iTunes to a new Windows Computer

Hi,

I'm in the process of moving from a Windows 10 computer to a Windows 11 computer. I have been advised to use OneDrive to store all of my data, as my new computer has less local storage.

I have always used iTunes to store all of my music and to sync with my apple devices (currently iPhone and iPad, but originally an iPod).

[I know that there is now a version of Apple Music for Windows, but I really don't want to have to learn how to use a new music app right now, having a new computer is enough change in one go. Also, I don't have an Apple Music subscription and don't want one, as I subscribe to a different music streaming service.]

So, can I connect iTunes on my new computer to my music library on OneDrive? If so how?

If not, I suppose I will have to copy the music library from OneDrive onto local storage on the new computer? Will it need a copy all of the other data in my music folder too?

A further complication is that I have quite a lot of music files stored in my downloads folder. I think there's a way to fix this in iTunes but I'm not sure how that works? Will I have to do this to enable iTunes to find all of my files on my new computer? There seem to be a lot of things that I have multiple copies of and I have zero idea where iTunes is picking up my stuff from? It doesn't help that some of the files were previously migrated from an even older computer, in 2016, and some of the filenames are not meaningful.

Just to complicate things even more, when I started iTunes on my new computer it asked me to sign in with my Apple ID and then it created an iTunes library on the new computer, with just the music I have previously purchased via iTunes in it. Will I have to delete that library in order to connect up with my existing library, or will that break something?

Thanks for any help with this. I wish I wasn't starting from here, but here I am.

OK, as a first step I tried to consolidate the files on my old PC, using iTunes File / Library / Organise Library/ Consolidate files, but this fails with the error message "Copying files failed. The filename was invalid or too long."

I now remember that this is why I haven't done this previously.

As I don't know what is causing the error, how can I move on from this?
