How to back up a new airbook, contents were transferred from an older airbook.

I have a new apple airbook with everything from my old apple airbook transferred on to it. My old laptop was being backed up manually using Time Machine and a 6T external hard drive. Can I just plug in the new laptop and attach the 6T hard drive and initiate the back up? Or do I have to create a new backup folder or some such thing?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

The short answer is yes, but a more comprehensive answer depends on the method you used to migrate data to the new Mac.

  • If you migrated content from the older one's TM backup, it will pick up where it left off.
  • If you migrated data directly from the older Mac, then you will be asked if you want to "inherit" the older one's backups, and it will pick up where it left off.
    • If you choose to create a new backup instead, the older one's backups will remain unaltered (and unalterable) until you erase the backup disk.
