How to store iCloud Desktop files only in iCloud

OSX Sonoma, M1 Mac Mini, 256GB/16GB

My only regret with this particular Mac is the small SSD, I'm constantly struggling with space.

I showed invisible files today, to have a look around to see what was taking up so much space. I saw that my Desktop (which I thought had been _moved_ to iCloud) seems to also be taking up 150GB of space on my very small internal drive.

Has my Desktop been moved to iCloud, or is there a mirror on my internal drive for the files that are also in iCloud? If yes, is there a way to have those files _only_ stored in iCloud? I could really use that 150GB of space (for those apps that insist on using cache on the startup drive).

Many thanks in advance for any insights,

Chas

iCloud is syncing storage only, unless you have your computer set to optimize storage. Under regular use it does not "move" the files, it simply copies them to iCloud so you can use them from other devices. The originals remain on the computer.

iCloud and "storage" are greatly misunderstood. iCloud storage is syncing storage and anything in it is also on all devices used with that Apple ID too. For example, If you want to reduce photos use of your Mac storage you can select to optimize those copies and only keep lower quality ones on your device and keep the full quality ones in iCloud. The link below has the general information you need about different kinds of "storage", how to get more, or how to better manage what you have:

Take-away:

1. Storage on a device itself is fixed and cannot be upgraded. You have to change your present device for one with more capacity.

2. iCloud storage is on Apple's main computers. It is not a like a normal storage hard drive but by using optimization settings on your device it can help free up device storage. Lesser used items and larger file versions can be stored in ICloud and you can get access while connected to the Internet. It does not turn a 64 GB storage device into a 64 (or whatever) + 50/200/2TB GB device but if you have a lot of things that aren't being used much, or you don't mind only having lesser quality photos on your device it can free up extra space so you can make the best of the GB you do have on the device itself.

Optimized Storage [macOS Sierra or later] helps you save storage space space by storing your content in iCloud and making it available on demand:

- When storage space is needed, files, photos, movies, email attachments, and other files that you seldom use are stored in iCloud automatically.

- Each file stays right where you last saved it, and downloads when you open it.

- Files that you’ve used recently remain on your Mac, along with optimized versions of your photos.

Optimize Mac Storage: Stores smaller versions of your photos on your Mac when storage space is limited, and keeps the original, full-size photos in iCloud. Choose this option to conserve space on your Mac. To restore the originals to your Mac, just select “Download Originals to this Mac.”

Personally I would recommend buying two external hard drives and archive (with one as a backup for the other) infrequently used files.
