AirPods 4 Bluetooth crashes on iPod touch 6/iPhone 6

I have airpods 4 not the anc and everytime I try to connect them to my ipod touch 6th generation or my iPhone 6 both still on ios 12.5.7 the Bluetooth just keeps crashing and I use both devices daily so any help would be nice
