My wife retired and was allowed to keep her macBook. We were not given the Apple account password and so had to do a complete reset without password. Starting macBook I was instructed to reinstall an Internet Connection. Done. But cannot get macOS to reinstall and each time I try I end up having to repeat restoring Internet Connection and get no further. Slowly going MAD! ANy help much appreciated.

What screen or messages do you see when you “cannot get macOS to reinstall”? A photo of the screen may help.
The first possibility that occurs to me is that the computer was enrolled in an MDM (mobile device management) and was not unenrolled by the organization from which your wife retired. If that’s the case, she will need to contact them to have that done, they should be able to provide a code or unenroll it remotely.

Is it possible that the Company your retired wife worked for did, not properly prepare the computer for Personal Use ?
Generally, Company Owned and issued Apple Computers are enrolled in a MDM ( Mobile Digital Management ) services like Jamf, InTune and the like
It is possible , the Company is still controlling the computer remotely and will not allow a reinstallation
As long as the computer Serial Number is in the MDM database . they have control over the computer, what can and can not be done with the computer
