iPhone not receiving Apple account verification codes

My iPhone is not receiving verification codes.

I get the "Apple account sign in requested" pop-up on my phone, and I click "allow." Then ... nothing happens.

I do not have any connection issues - I can send and receive texts, emails, and phone calls. But the verification code never comes. Sometimes, but not always, I get the option to receive the code via text. The text comes through fine.

What could be wrong? Any ideas how to address it?

iPhone 11, iOS 26

Remove entirely any VPN you are using.

Q: Suddenly not getting texts for two factor authentication on iPhone

A: Reset network settings:

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

If after all that you still can’t receive verification codes, you can request account recovery to regain access to your account [ How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support ]. Account recovery might take a few days or longer, depending on the specific account information you can provide to verify your identity.

Once you can sign in again, add more trusted numbers and recovery contacts to your account as suggested earlier.

Is this phone your ONLY Apple Device ?

(Since you’re now “in” … don’t want you to get inadvertently locked “out”)

Do you have another Apple Trusted Device which IS receiving codes? (i.e. iPad, Mac)

Have you established additional Trusted Numbers (another cell phone and/or landline) and verified that they DO receive the codes?

NOTE: Trusted Numbers are different from — and in addition to — your Trusted Devices.

Ok. You DEF want (need) to get some additional Trusted Numbers working first — and TESTED — before any further “troubleshooting” is attempted.

These can be virtually any number worldwide; both “text-capable” mobile phones AND “voice-only” landlines.

These Trusted Numbers are what you will NEED to receive the verification code if your only device is ever lost, damaged, or stolen.

Okay, I see what you are doing now.

1) I see you have a me.com account. I don't know if this is the reason but those old me.com accounts are a not-infrequent core of issues found in this community. Just an observation.

2) If none of our suggestions have worked then I suggest you contact Apple about this. We on this forum are just other everyday customers like yourself and we have no more resources than you already have (fewer in fact, since we do not have access to your account).

Refer to this page for Apple Support features ➔ Contact - Official Apple Support

Select from the presented options until you find a solution for your issue, or see if there is a chat or phone call contact method offered lower on the page under “Get more help” (you sometimes have to narrow down the options multiple times before this is shown). If you do not see your issue, keep experimenting with any series of selections until you reach one that offers a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

Chattanoogan, my only apple device is this phone, and my only trusted number is the one assigned to this phone.

By the way, here's another odd problem: When I log in to this forum, I get the following popup. Clicking the black "sign in with iphone" does nothing, but if I click that button 3-4 times I get the "failed to verify" message and have to log in with my email and password.

Limnos, thanks for that. My issue is different. From Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication - Apple Support:

I am getting the authorization pop-up in #2, and I tap "allow" as indicated in #3, but I am not receiving the "verification code" in #4.

Apple sometimes gives me the option to receive some codes by text, which works, but I don't always get the option to receive codes by text.

I don't use 2FA so I can't check things firsthand. To me it appears to be all referring to a user with multiple devices. You said you only have this one device. As far as that is concerned I am very surprised that 2FA works at all for you. To me it would defeat the whole purpose of multifactor if all I needed was a single device to do all the authentication needed.

It texts are arriving as SMS that's cellular service. Codes/notifications would be arriving by WiFi.

Read this document about iMessage (blue), RCS (green) and SMS/MMS (also green) text messages --> What is the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS? - Apple Support

- iMessage = blue bubble. This is message sent between Apple devices only, over WiFi or cellular-data.

- Text Message = green bubble. These are 'regular' text messages (SMS) or a text+media messages (MMS) sent over a cellular text-messaging plan (note it says "Text Message" at the top). These can communicate between Apple mobile devices and non-Apple phones. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a newer variant of this.
