Pages (current v.) will not italicize in some fonts, will in others.

In the 2025 version of Pages, [version 14.4 (7043.0.93)]

why can't I highlight a section of a doc to change it to Italics?

I changed the Font and retyped a line and then selected a word (Italics) and clicked Italics button in the Text column; BUT in the fonts noted below, selecting (highlighting) the word and clicking Italics button DID NOT WORK; it stays in regular typeface -- though I cannot show you here-- Tried to cut and paste it w/o success.

Here are some examples of Fonts I tried, all from the Pages text menu list:

Worked with:

  • Arial 13 . It worked.
  • And it did work with Helvetica Neue: :
  • AND it DOES work with Optima:

Did not work with

  • Geneva (selected a word in the sentence I typed, clicked italics button, nothing happened).
  • Did NOT work in Tahoma nor MS Reference Sans Serif.

Here is a cut and pasted screen shot of the samples I tried:

[end screen shot)

so my questions are: what the heck?

And is there any logic to this?

And is there something reasonably easy to do about it?

I have some nearsightedness (despite glasses), and would LIKE to use a font that is larger, and modern looking... my favorites are the ones I'd prefer to use Geneva or Tahoma as my default font.

Any help/solutions would be appreciated!

Unlike Microsoft Word which can induce faux italic and bold treatments on fonts that have no italic or bold font installed, Pages must have those respective font faces installed to change the selected text. There is no 2025 version of Pages, just the version.

Here are the font faces that are installed for the mentioned fonts:

  • Geneva
    • Regular
  • Tahoma
    • Regular
    • Bold
  • Century Gothic
    • Regular
    • Italic
    • Bold
    • Bold Italic

I am using Pages v14.4 on Tahoe 26.1 and Century Gothic Italic does italicize selected text for me.
