Apple ID Recovery Key: Sign-in or password reset?

Hello there,

For two factors authentication you can create a recovery key.

I am wondering if is only to reset password or can be use to log in too? I mean if you create a recovery key and then get a new device and try sing in to your Apple account you will need a trusted device for the code or a phone number to receive the code.

lets say you don’t have a trusted or another Apple device and you can not receive code to any number.

Will you be able to use recovery key to sing in instead of code or will you use recovery key to just recover your account resetting password.

i mean i remember my password could i use recovery key for two factors authentication authentication or as it says is only for recovery your account…

I don’t know if I make sense asking Is the option of use password and recovery key to sign in or will need to start recovery if don’t have trusted device or phone to receive code.

Do not make sense to be forced to start recovery when knowing password and recovery key could be enough to sign in your Apple account.

Am I missing something?

Thank you much appreciated community

Re: ”… if you don’t have a trusted device nor a phone number …”

You will always have phone numbers you can use as Trusted Numbers. (e.g. Home landline, office, parent, sibling, cousin, boy/girlfriend)

NOT having Trusted Numbers setup is quite simply … being irresponsible for one’s own affairs.

And again NO the Recovery Key does NOT replace the need to be able to receive 2FA Verification Codes

A Recovery Key allows you to tecover access to your Apple Account if you forget your Apple Account password.

(however, if one has managed to loose / forget their Apple Account password, I’m somewhat skeptical that they WILL have their Recovery Key)

However, what a Recovery Key DOES do is prevent Apple from assisting you with account recovery. It’s ALL ON YOU.

So the purpose of it is to recover access to account by yourself instead of relaying on Apple I guess .

So if you don’t have a trusted device nor a phone number for codes and want to sign in even remembering password you will be forced to start recovery with Apple or recovery key as no other way to bypass two factors Oh wait you could use security key instead of codes I think I just answered my question

I think you are missing the subtle differentiation between a Trusted Device and a Trusted Number.

A Trusted Device is an Apple device signed-in to your Apple Account. It can always display 2FA codes needed to “authenticate” a new (or replacement) device onto your account.

A Trusted Number is another phone number(s) at which you can receive 2FA Verification Codes when you loose access to your Trusted Device(s). These can be either SMS-capable mobile phones or voice-only landlines.
