MacBook Pro black/blue display issue

Hi everyone, I’m having a serious display issue with my MacBook Pro and I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

My MacBook Pro turns on normally - I hear the startup sound, the keyboard lights up, the charger shows green, the trackpad responds, and I can even see the faint shadow of the cursor when I move it. I can also barely see shapes or shadows on the screen if I shine a light on it.

But the screen itself is basically black/blue and not display anything visibly. It’s like the backlight stopped working, although the rest of the system seems fully functional.

Has anyone experienced this? is this definitely a backlight failure, a display cable issue, or could it be software related?

Any tips on what I can try before taking it in for repair would be super appreciated. Thank you!

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.4

Blue/Black Screen:

Presumedly, it is a hardware issue. But, before making that assertion, plug this into an external display > merrier the screen through the keyboard > see if you get the same issue. If so, it is a software issue. If not, then it is hardware issue, and you should get this serviced.

Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

(Applies yo Intel-Based Macs Only) Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. Updates), system configurations (i.e. for Power) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Try performing each thrice. Being it may take sometime, be certain you have the time to perform these resets.

Connect an External Display:

You can try connecting an external display to your Mac, and add it as mirrored display. Go here: Connect a Display to your Mac - Apple Support. HDMI is the most-common port you'd need, and without one, you'd need an adapter, such as this: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple. Because it has a female USB-C post, you will not lose the port access for other items, such as your power adapter. Learn more here: Extend or Mirror your Mac Desktop Across Multiple Displays - Apple Support

Mirroring Through the Mac's Keyboard:

  • Without Touchbar: Hold Down [command + F1]
  • With Touchbar: Hold Down: [command + dull screen]
