How to reduce file size of scanned documents in Notes app on iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Recently the Notes App has started producing oversized scan files (I have 17pro max, app is updated) and I can't figure out how to correct it. I tried the "grayscale", but it didn't size it down enough. I loved the scan document option in the Notes App and now it's not useable, very frustrating as it became a reliable app and caused me to submit something late because of this recent change in resolution making the file too big now. I had 4 pages and it got it down to 6.4 MB, but it had to be 4 MB. I even tried Google Drive and same problem. UGH why did you change this feature Apple, you made it worse not better! It worked perfectly fine before.
