Scroll to Top gesture delayed on iPad Pro M4

Hello,

On my iPad Pro M4 running iPadOS 26.1, tapping the top of the screen no longer triggers an immediate Scroll to Top. There is a consistent delay of about half a second. This happens in multiple system apps and third party apps. Restarting, disabling Stage Manager, and resetting all settings did not change the behavior. Touch Accommodations are off.

Expected: Instant scroll to top.

Actual: Delayed response (about 0.5 seconds).

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks

Device: iPad Pro M4

OS: iPadOS 26.1

I haven't encountered a noticeable delay in the iPad responding to a correctly placed tap to the screen.

If your iPad is not operating as expected - and persists after performing a restart - it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you might be well advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assist with troubleshooting:

iPadOS 26 differs in some respects to earlier versions of iPadOS. Some changes to control gestures have been implemented to accommodate updates to the both the revised GUI and Apps.

Some Apps do indeed require two taps to trigger the auto-scroll to the top of a scrolled page...

By example, for Safari, the first tap at the top edge exposes the full tab and search/address bar - while the second tap triggers the scroll to the top of the current screen.

By similar example, the Mail App uses a single tap at the top of the main Mail message window to scroll directly to the top of the currently selected email message.

Thanks for the explanation. I’m still seeing inconsistent behavior across apps in iPadOS 26

For example: Safari requires two taps, Mail scrolls to the top with one tap, and in Photos and Apple Music the main content scrolls first even when tapping above the sidebar.

This inconsistency didn’t exist in previous versions, so it’s unclear whether this is an intentional change or a regression in how the system chooses the scroll target.
