Missing documents - iCloud Drive

Hi! I’m using a Mac and had a large number of documents stored in iCloud Drive. Recently many of these files disappeared and I can no longer find them in Finder or on iCloud.com. iCloud Drive is enabled and I’m signed in with the correct Apple ID. The folders that the documents was stored in is still there, but not the documents. Does anyone know what could have caused this, and how I can recover the missing documents?”
