iPhone Messages app badge not showing unread messages

Has anyone found a fix for the messages app NOT showing badge notifications for messages received while the phone is unlocked?

Example: I’m watching a YouTube video or playing a game on my phone, and I receive several text messages. The banner shows across the top telling me messages were received, but if I finish what I’m doing first, then close the app I was using, there’s no badge icon on the messages to indicate received messages. Additionally, there’s now indication at all of unread messages if I open the messages app.

iPhone 17pro, been happening since iOS 26 update, still happening with newer update. All settings are set to shows badges…etc.
