Do you have to? No. But then you'll have to accept that you won't get bug fixes, security updates or any new features going forward. Typically, Apple will at least offer security updates for the outgoing iOS version, but only for a limited amount of time. If you're OK with making yourself vulnerable, that's a choice you'll have to make.

I missed that they don't want Apple Intelligence. So you're absolutely correct. They don't even own an iPhone capable of running Apple Intelligence to begin with.

I suspected they meant

“for iPhone 15 and 15 Pro” but only guess
