MacBook Air: Sound stuck after Bluetooth speaker off

MacBook Air running Sonoma 14.8.2

Just bought a bluetooth speaker. I can connect to it OK, but if I turn the speaker off, I cannot get the sound to go back to the internal speakers without a system reset. Toggling (or turning off) bluetooth doesn't fix the issue. If I can't get the Mac to do this automatically, will just bail on the whole Bluetooth speaker thing.
