Saving Word documents to iCloud instead of OneDrive

You should first upload the document to iCloud Drive. Then use a word processing app to access it from there.

Saving Word Files Elsewhere:

Save these to your Desktop, but you need to do so manually...

I. Remove OneDrive as a Login Item:

1. Go to: System Settings
2. Click: General
3. Click: Login Items & Extensions
4. Toggle Off: Microsoft OneDrive
5. Toggle Off: OneDrive

then..

II. Save to iCloud Drive:

1. Click: Word Menu
2. Select: File
3. Click: iCloud Drive (on the left pane)
4. Click: Save

I personally know nothing about using Microsoft Word on Apple products. (I used it on Windows computers until fifteen years ago.)

I do know the Apple’s Pages application can both import and export Word files as well as access iCloud Drive.
