Mac Trash emptying slow after moving CleanMyMac folder

I'm trying to delete the following folder: /Users/myName/Library/Containers/CleanMyMac/tmp

prior to completely uninstalling CleanMyMac from my Mac mini M4.

I moved the Users/myName/Library/Containers/CleanMyMac/tmp folder to the Trash and tapped on Empty Trash. The operation has been running for hours and, so far, it's saying it has deleted over 4.5 million files and it's still going and showing no signs of stopping any time soon!!

If I stop it, will all those files lose be unmarked as deleted? If I restart emptying the Trash later, will I be starting all over from scratch?

Searching on some filenames I saw during CleanMyMac's Deep Scan for malware is how I tracked down this tmp folder.

Once this type of software is installed and embedded into the computer  ie CleanMyMac

Start Over from Scratch

Heavy Handed ? - Yes

Effective in removing CleanMyMac aka BrickMyMac - Yes

For Apple Silicon computer >> Use Disk Utility to erase a Mac with Apple silicon.

Always make a Time Machine Backup  before  proceeding

Emphasis on " User Account Only "

If going this route - I suggest Not using Startup Assist to migrate everything back.

This will probably Re-Introduce ( CleanMyMac ) back into the Operating System

Why would I trust CleanMyMac to solve the problem they created?

Unfortunately, the Terminal command: sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/* doesn't work either.

If I wasn't stuck waiting on this, I'd use the Terminal to create a couple hundred test files to empty out and see how emptying the Trash behaves when interrupted. But I can't even do that.

I was hoping someone here would know the answer. If not, and it's still running in the morning, I'll call Apple Support and use the AppleCare+ I pay for on all my devices. Apple's Mac Support Experts are excellent when the Advisors are unsure or don't know the solution.

Thanks for all the info!

And the solution to the current situation is . . . ?

The Tmp files are in my User account, so Time Machine won't help me.

Luckily, I have all my data in iCloud.

A very patient and very knowledgeable Apple Mac Expert walked me through making a bootable USB with a Sequoia disk image for emergency use.

I've since re-installed Sequoia with it and confirmed that it works.

I remember I had to point it to my Mac drive, as it wanted to install it on the USB drive (No, no, no!! Lol).

I don't remember if I used it through Mac Recovery Mode, or, if I just plugged it in and booted from it.

Suggestion on that, please? Thanks.

FWIW, it's not unheard of for a company to plant posts "all over the place" espousing the wonders of their software. 🤷‍♂️

The Internet is full of scoundrels, for sure. This is how far we've come from the days of CompuServe and an early Commodore network I used in the 1980s. Back before WWW when everything was done in dumb Terminal mode via CTRL commands. Forums were then called Bulletin Boards and BBS was the reigning software to run them.

Please, re-state what help you are needing help with ?

Trusting each other is getting harder and harder.

Wasn't like this when I was a young man. I guess every generation says that. Lol

I'm back on a wiped clean Mac with a fresh install of Tahoe 26.2. Would have been faster but I got stuck on the Activation screen, until I tried Device password and that got me to the next screen.

Once back on my Mac on Tahoe, my Trackpad pointer got stuck on my iPad, right as I was trying to get back to this forum to thank you all.

Hoping that's 3 of 3 and no more surprises. 🤞🏻

Thanks a lot Gents for all your suggestions, tips, and words of wisdom.

Sincerely,

John
