Mail app MBOX files: Local storage or external SSD?

I am new to MacBook shifted from windows, still learning. I have gmail MBOX files from many years running into several GBs. My macbook is 256 GB and macOS and system data already taken 90 GB.

I want to find where does the MAIL App Store the imported emails? Does it store in local storage? if this is the case I will run out of space, is there an easy way out to change location from local storage to external SSD. Thanks

You have them on the mail server where your email comes from. If it's a IMAP server which most are these days that is one storage medium.

the other is

How to Access the Storage Folder on Your Mac

You can quickly access the main Mail folder using Finder:

In Finder, click the Go menu in the top menu bar.

Select Go to Folder... (or press Shift + Command + G).

Type the path: ~/Library/Mail/

Click Go.

You will then see the versioned folders (V*) that contain all your Mail data, including the files for the On My Mac mailboxes.

If you have TimeMachine then they are backed up to it as well, but they are in a hidden folder on the TimeMachine.
