Removing Dropbox Folder from iCloud Backup when Dropbox is not on your Desktop

I am looking for a way to stop icloud from backing up or incorporating my dropbox folder in its backup. As far as I can tell I do not have my dropbox folder on my desktop (it's located in the control center and in the dock...). What I have been able to find is this thread: Stop iCloud from backing up Dropbox - Apple Community

but the references are all allude to removing the dropbox folder from my desktop. At this point it feels like a Catch-22 and all I want to do is exclude Dropbox from iCloud. If there is a solution to this out there (am looking to Apple for this first), I'm very interested in seeing it.
