iPhone 12 Pro Max camera/screen issue causing Face ID failure - options?
Hi, I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max bought refurbished 2.5 years ago in excellent condition. Still runs well, very happy with it. Always kept in a case, with a screen protector, and treated well.
I noticed about 18 months or so ago I tiny dark patch on the screen, a semicircle at the bottom edge, about 3-4mm radius. It's never got any worse and doesn't affect the usage. I also noticed that the selfie camera was a bit blurry and could see what looked like dust in there. This has got gradually worse, and the camera takes terrible photos now.
Took it into an Apple store who told me the screen was delaminating and they couldn't clean out the camera without a new screen which was £300+ and not worthwhile. Trade-in is next to nothing as it's deemed "screen/camera problem". I have considered a non-Apple screen but I've been told that often as a "safety measure" Face ID etc. won't work with an aftermarket screen.
It's got to the stage that Face ID is now quite flaky and it almost always asks me for the password to enable Face ID. I planned to get another year or 2 out of it, I know it's old now but it is still updated and otherwise a great phone.
My options seem to be:
- put up with it, always use the main camera, and get used to typing my code every time I use it (this is starting to grate)
- get an aftermarket screen in the hope it will fix the problem (will it need a camera too?), and hope that Face ID still works
- bite the bullet and upgrade - standard non-Pro iPhone 17 looks good - will the standard camera on this be a match for the 12 Pro Max camera?
Bit annoyed to be honest. Phone reported all fine and original when I first got it, had an Apple battery replacement, so it seems like it might be a manufacturing fault to me. Certainly not down to my treatment of it...
Thoughts?
