HP LaserJet Pro P1102 not working after macOS update

I’m using an HP LaserJet Pro P1102 printer on a newer macOS version running on an Apple Silicon Mac.

HP no longer provides officially supported drivers for newer macOS versions, and the original installer refuses to run due to a macOS version restriction. Because of this, the printer cannot be installed using the standard HP installer.

Has anyone found a reliable way to get the HP LaserJet Pro P1102 working on newer macOS versions?

Below is a method that worked for me by modifying the installer’s macOS version check.

What worked for me

I downloaded the original HP installer package and manually adjusted the macOS version check inside the installer so it would allow installation on newer macOS versions. After rebuilding and installing the package, the printer drivers were successfully installed and the printer works as expected.

I’m sharing the general steps here in case it helps others with the same printer.

Summary of the approach

  • Download the original HP printer driver installer from HP
  • Expand the installer package using Terminal
  • Edit the installer’s Distribution file to update the macOS version requirement
  • Rebuild and install the modified package
  • Restart macOS and add the printer manually if needed

Here is a brief outline of what worked for me, without redistributing any modified files.

I downloaded the original HP installer package (HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.pkg) from HP and expanded it using Terminal. Inside the expanded package, I edited the Distribution file to adjust the macOS version check, allowing the installer to run on newer macOS versions. After rebuilding the package and installing it, the drivers were installed successfully.

After a system restart, I added the printer manually in System Settings → Printers & Scanners. If the exact model was not listed, selecting Generic PCL Printer also worked.

I’m not sharing the modified installer itself, only the approach. If anyone needs clarification or runs into issues following these steps, feel free to reply here and I’ll try to help.
