Gmail to my dock

I have read about how to download the Gmail icon to the cock but it doesn't work. I drag the icon and it doesn't stay in the dock.

Any app you want to stay on the Dock can be kept there by the same means:

When it is opened it appears in the dock. Right-click the dock icon and in options select “keep in dock”
