I am suddenly unable to open a number of my picture and video files (.png, .jpeg, .mov, .mp4). I get the message "There is no application set to open the document." These files are very important to me. Does anyone know what could be going on?

Did you unlock the padlock at the bottom right? If you go to the bottom of the Get Info, do you have read/write permissions? If not, can you give yourself read/write permissions?
You can also try resetting your home folder permissions.

I tried, but it won't let me select an application - here's what I see.
Select one of the files that won't open and do a Get Info (command - I) on the file. Under Open with, select your desired application. Click Change All. You may need to do this for each file type.
Resetting the home folder permissions seems to have worked. Thank you!! This is a huge relief.
