New 8TB Seagate external backup plus hub for mac and Time Machine not syncing

Hi. I have a new 8TB Seagate external backup plus hub for mac and Time Machine won't recognize the full amount of space open and says i need more space to back up my MacBook Pro running Mojave 10.14.

"Time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from because there was insufficient free space on the source volume(s)."

The Seagate is brand new and I erased it in Disk Utilities and made sure it was mounted. It says 852.2MB used and Time machine only sees 852.2MB. Estimated size of Back-up 499GB.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

After getting the below:

"The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required."

I erased and assigned Mac OS Extended (Journaled-encrypt) format.

That fixed the issue. The Seagate is now working with Time Machine.

How many partitions are there? Is there only one? If there is more than one, perhaps consolidate them all into one. Also, be certain that the entire partition is that of of APFS File System Format.
