Many thanks. A simple tick box fixed the problem of access to my documents in the iCloud.

I didn’t manage to download my documents, though.

I want them on my iMac, where I can see them.

Any tips?

You shouldn't. Towards the end of the article are instructions for getting the files back on your computer.

Where are the documents located? Have you checked the Documents folder?

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop iCloud Drive syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the  sync to complete.

Last resort  - have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?

Thanks. All my documents have been taken to icloud. Nothing now on my iMac.

I see quite a few people have the same problem.

I would like all my documents returned to my iMac an for the cloud to simply back them up. If iCloud can't do that, I would prefer not to use it for documents.

(For photos, it's a fine facility)

I could try your suggestion but I'm afraid of loosing all my documents.

Will I?
