I am using macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and the new emojis that were added to apple a while ago still don't appear on my macbook while using messages. I also cannot see them when a contact sends them to me. Is there a way to add them?

You need to update the OS to get recently-added emojis. Apple doesn't add them to previous releases, but some websites implement emojis separately.
