Blue message bubbles identify iMessages, which are messages between iOS devices. Green message bubbles are regular SMS text, with non-iOS devices. iMessages are data messages which can be sent/received on cellular or wi-fi data, while SMS are controlled by the cellular carrier and can only be sent while on cellular connection.
